China's semiconductor industry may become its biggest market next year

Time:2019-02-22

Sales of semiconductor equipment in the Chinese mainland reached $3.98 billion in the third quarter of 2018, up 106 percent from the same period last year, according to the international semiconductor industry association (SEMI). China is also on track to surpass South Korea as the world's largest semiconductor market by full-year sales in 2019, the association forecast.

Since this year, global semiconductor industry is in boom downcycle. Global semiconductor equipment sales growth will slow to 10.8 percent and 7.7 percent in 2018 and 2019, down from 37 percent in 2017, with some slowdown in equipment input growth, SEMI data showed. However, the sales volume of equipment in the Chinese mainland market is still expected to achieve a rapid growth of 44% in 2018 and 4% in 2019, becoming the core driving force of the industry.
